Untrustworthy promotions and pricing in Merchant Center

What Google publishes about misleading offers, hidden charges, and promotions policies — and the honest limit: GMC Marketplace does not detect promo violations on a listing.

Buyers shopping for a “working GMC store” often look at ROAS and ignore the offer the shopper actually sees. Google’s misrepresentation and Shopping ads policies are explicit about promotions that start a purchase without full information, and about representing the business or products in a way that is not accurate, realistic, and truthful.

What Google published (not a secret list)

  • Do not prompt a purchase, download, or other commitment without all relevant information and the customer’s explicit consent.
  • Disclose the payment model and the full expense the customer will bear, including extra conditions that change the total (membership, extra purchase requirements, undisclosed payment obligations).
  • Shipping, returns, and terms must be clear and discoverable.
  • If you use Merchant Center promotions, titles must state thresholds, restrictions, and extra charges; details must appear on the landing page before sign-up or phone/email verification.

What this product can and cannot do

GMC Marketplace does not crawl a listing’s theme for strikethrough prices, countdown timers, or “free” claims. Admin review checks the information the seller submitted. Scout-on-listing facts, when present, are store metrics such as domain age and product counts — not a promotions-policy engine.

Open the product page and the checkout path on any store you may buy. If the advertised price is not the price a customer can actually pay, that is a Google-published problem you would own after transfer.

Questions

Is “untrustworthy promotions” a separate scanner GMC Marketplace runs?

No. We do not detect promotional-policy issues on listings. This page restates what Google publishes so buyers know what to look at on the live site.

What does Google say about prices and conditions?

Misrepresentation Help forbids failing to disclose the payment model and full expense before and after purchase, and forbids unclear or missing terms, shipping, or return policies. Promotions policies require titles and landing pages that state thresholds, restrictions, and extra charges before the shopper commits.

Do surprise “taxes at checkout” or fake strikethrough prices matter after I buy the store?

Yes, because they are on the destination Google reviews. Changing the theme does not reset policy history, and leaving misleading price presentation in place is your problem once you own the site.
